Meet the Maker: The Story Behind Barkly Basics
At Country Culture, we're passionate about sharing the stories behind the Australian brands we proudly feature in our gift hampers. Every product has a maker, a vision and a journey behind it, and we believe those stories deserve to be celebrated.
This month, we're shining a spotlight on Barkly Basics, a Melbourne-based brand that has transformed everyday household essentials through thoughtful design, innovation and functionality. Founded by scientist-turned-entrepreneur Natasha Malkov, Barkly Basics has grown from a single designer sponge into a collection of more than 140 products that make everyday living both practical and beautiful.
From Molecular Biology to Beautiful Everyday Essentials
Before launching Barkly Basics, Natasha spent over a decade in a very different world. Armed with a PhD in molecular biology, she dedicated ten years of her career to breast cancer research at the St Vincent Institute in Melbourne.
The idea for Barkly Basics came unexpectedly during a simple weekend chore.
"One morning I was washing the dishes and looked at the bright yellow sponge sitting beside my sink," Natasha recalls. "I thought, why is the sponge still yellow? Why am I hiding this thing under the sink?"
Curious, she began researching whether there were stylish, aesthetically pleasing alternatives available. To her surprise, there weren't.
What began as a small creative idea soon evolved into something much bigger. Natasha realised she wasn't the only person wanting practical household items that also looked beautiful in the home.
After more than a year spent designing and developing her first product, Barkly Basics officially launched in 2018 with its now-iconic designer kitchen sponge.
But the vision didn't stop there.
"If I had a beautiful sponge, I couldn't pair it with a bright green bottle of dish detergent," Natasha says. "That's when the idea of creating a whole collection started to form."
Today, Barkly Basics boasts a range of more than 140 products, proving that even the simplest everyday essentials can be reimagined.
A Name Born at 2am
Like many great ideas, the name Barkly Basics came together in the early hours of the morning.
Natasha describes herself as an "ideas person", often waking her husband in the middle of the night with a new concept.
She knew she wanted the brand to represent everyday basics while maintaining a minimalist, timeless feel. After playing with countless words and names, inspiration struck unexpectedly.
For some reason, the name Barclays Bank popped into her head, and from there, Barkly Basics was born.
The name felt simple, memorable and globally appealing. It rolled off the tongue and perfectly captured the brand's ethos of elevating everyday essentials.
Innovation in the Everyday
While the business began with kitchen sponges, Barkly Basics has expanded far beyond the sink.
Today, the collection includes cleaning products, personal care items, gourmet pantry products, baby products, pet essentials and much more.
Among Natasha's favourite innovations is Aqua Base, a revolutionary 99 per cent alkaline water surface spray.
Despite being almost entirely water, the product is incredibly effective thanks to a specialised electrolysis process that creates a pH level of 12.5. This environment is hostile to bacteria, eliminating them within seconds while deodorising, cleaning and degreasing surfaces.
"It's probably one of the cleanest cleaning products on the market," Natasha explains.
Equally close to her heart is Barkly Basics' braille-labelled collection, created to support people who are visually impaired.
Recognising a significant gap in the market, Natasha and her team developed products designed to encourage independent living and make everyday tasks more accessible.
"We wanted to create products that allowed people to feel confident and independent in their own homes."
It remains one of the achievements Natasha is most proud of.
Built in Melbourne, Powered by Family
Barkly Basics is proudly based in Tullamarine, Melbourne, with its warehouse located just minutes from Melbourne Airport.
The location has played a significant role in the business's growth, allowing easy access to major logistics networks and supporting the brand's expanding manufacturing capabilities.
Behind the scenes, however, the business remains refreshingly personal.
Natasha describes her team as a "pocket rocket" team of five, with everyone wearing multiple hats.
She still personally manages many aspects of the business, from marketing and customer emails to day-to-day operations.
"Accessibility is everything," she says. "Being able to answer the phone and help customers quickly is incredibly important to us."
Family also remains at the heart of the business. Natasha's father helps operate the machinery used to fill products, while her mother, a talented seamstress, hand-sews tags onto tea towels and assists with product processing.
Together with their small team of pickers and packers, they continue to prove that big things can come from small, passionate teams.
The Challenges Behind the Brand
Like any growing business, the journey hasn't been without its challenges.
For Natasha, one of the ongoing hurdles has been maintaining quality control, particularly with products manufactured overseas.
Certain products, such as their popular dish wand, have faced quality issues over the years. Despite considering discontinuing it several times, loyal customers have always encouraged the team to keep it in the range.
While locally produced items offer greater control, imported products present additional complexities, requiring constant monitoring and refinement.
"It's an ongoing process of double and triple-checking everything."
Finding Balance in the Fast Lane
Outside of business, Natasha has a surprising passion: motorsport.
A self-confessed tomboy, she spends many weekends driving her Porsche 911 alongside fellow enthusiasts, exploring mountain roads and race tracks.
For Natasha, driving provides an unexpected form of mindfulness.
"It forces me to be completely present," she says. "I don't think about work or business. It's both relaxing and exhilarating."
When she's not behind the wheel, you'll likely find her near the water, particularly on Victoria's beautiful Mornington Peninsula.
With its stunning beaches and scenic coastal drives, it has become her favourite place to unwind and recharge.
Thoughtful Design for Everyday Living
What began as a simple question about why kitchen sponges had to be yellow has evolved into one of Australia's most thoughtful household brands.
Through innovation, beautiful design and a genuine desire to improve everyday living, Barkly Basics continues to challenge convention and redefine the products we use every day.
From pioneering braille-labelled collections to creating elegant alternatives to household staples, Natasha and her team have demonstrated that functionality and aesthetics can work hand in hand.
